Christmas Tree Geo Board
Picture
Picture

Materials:

  • Foam cone

  • White 1” panel nails

  • Small green rubber bands (loom bands)

  • Plastic 1” pegs for ceramic Christmas trees (lightbulbs or globes)

  • Chenille stem pipe cleaners
Instructions:
Picture
1. Press nails firmly into foam cone all around. I prefer placing them randomly for more creative shapes, but a linear pattern will also work. Do not drive the nails all the way in so that there is space to loop the rubber bands around the nailheads.

2. Stretch the rubber bands around nailheads to form different geometric shapes. You can create triangles (three sided), quadrilaterals (four sided) and pentagons (five sided).

3. For older kids, identify different quadrilaterals like squares (4 equal sides and right angle corners), trapezoids (one pair of opposite parallel sides) and rhombus (4 equal sides and pair of opposite sides parallel to each other). Shown here are a trapezoid and pentagon.

4. Continue to cover the foam cone with many green rubber bands all around.

5. Add plastic pegs in the shapes of lightbulbs or globes around the tree as an optional decoration.

6. Bend the pipe cleaner into the shape of a star. Twist the two ends together into a straight line pointing down.

7. Press the bottom edge of the pipe cleaner star into the top of the foam tree to complete your Christmas Tree Geoboard.
STEM:
Through this project, you can form and explore different geometric shapes. These include triangles (three sided), quadrilaterals (four sided), and pentagons (five sided). Older students can identify more complex types of quadrilaterals including: Squares which have 4 equal sides and right angle corners, Trapezoids which have one pair of opposite parallel sides, and Rhombuses which have 4 equal sides and a pair of opposite sides parallel to each other.
